No-exam life insurance

Who's eligible, how the faster process works, and what to expect if you don't qualify.

Many carriers now use accelerated underwriting: for applicants within their age and coverage-amount windows, they make decisions from your application, prescription records, driving history, and other databases rather than scheduling a paramedical exam. Some approvals come through within a day. Each quote here tells you whether that carrier expects an exam, might request one, or won't need one for that product.

What it changes

No exam doesn't mean no underwriting. Carriers verify your answers through records and databases, and any policy issued based on false information can be challenged for two years. If something in their investigation raises a concern, they might still request an exam or lab work; you can decide whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Usually, applicants under about 60 years old, applying for coverage amounts within the carrier's accelerated limits, with no significant health issues and no tobacco use for the past year or longer. A few carriers will accept recent bloodwork from a doctor's visit instead of their own exam.

If an exam is required, expect a 20- to 30-minute appointment with a paramedical examiner at your location — home or workplace — in the Fairfield area, at no charge. For healthy applicants, exam results frequently yield a better rate class, so the exam often works in your favor.
